Campus guide · IIT Kanpur · Uttar Pradesh
IIT Kanpur's campus covers 1,055 acres on the Grand Trunk Road, about 15 km west of Kanpur city, and it has its own airstrip. Nearly every student lives on campus across 15 halls of residence, among mango orchards and flocks of peafowl that the institute says have been there since the land was farmland. This is the sourced guide: the size, the halls, how to get there, and what makes the campus unusual.
How big is the IIT Kanpur campus?
The institute's overview is short: "Campus Area: 1055 Acres Nearly all IITK students live on campus" (IIT Kanpur overview). Its history page adds the location: "IIT Kanpur is situated on the Grand Trunk Road, approximately 15 kilometers west of the Kanpur City. It occupies a sprawling area of around 1055 acres" (IIT Kanpur history). Wikipedia rounds it to 1,000 or 1,100 acres in different sections; 1,055 is the institute's figure.

A campus built from farmland
IIT Kanpur started in borrowed rooms at Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in 1959 with 100 students. The Uttar Pradesh government gave the land in 1960. Architect Achyut Kanvinde designed the campus around what was already there: "The residential campus was meticulously carved out of a typical countryside in India boasting of standing crops, stately acacia woods and mango orchards, flocks of peafowl and other species of birds, most of which continue to adorn the campus to date" (IIT Kanpur history).
Its early academics came from the United States. From 1962 to 1972, "the institute was mentored by a consortium of nine leading US universities under the Kanpur Indo-American Program (KIAP)", including MIT, Caltech, Princeton and Berkeley (IIT Kanpur history).
How to get to IIT Kanpur
"From Kanpur Central, IIT Kanpur is around 20 kilometers away. Pre-paid auto-rickshaws and taxis are available at the railway station to take you to the campus" (IIT Kanpur visitors page). By air, Kanpur's Chakeri airport is about 25 km and an hour away; Lucknow's international airport is about 70 km, 1.5 to 2 hours by road.
IIT Kanpur halls of residence
Hostels are called halls and go by number. The Dean of Students' Affairs site lists Halls 1 to 5, Halls 7 to 14, and Girls Hostels 1 and 2, fifteen in all, plus SBRA for married scholars (IIT Kanpur DOSA). There is no Hall 6 in the current list.
Hall 12 gives a sense of scale. It has "six blocks, A, B, C, D, E, and F and each block is 6 storey building. It has a capacity of about 600 students with about 456 rooms", with single, double and triple rooms, and mostly houses first- to third-year B.Tech students (Hall 12). Students on r/IITK are blunter about the older halls, ranking Halls 2, 3 and 5 last for infrastructure.
For fees and room types across IITs, see our IIT hostel guide. IIT Kanpur's hall rules make residence compulsory; exemptions still pay full seat rent.
The airstrip and the flight lab
IIT Kanpur is the only IIT with a runway on campus. Its aerospace department runs a Flight Laboratory described as "a unique national facility with three single engine airplanes", and it "also has several gliders and an active gliding center where students as well as any member of IIT community can become a member" (IIT Kanpur Flight Laboratory). The fleet listed on that page may be out of date. Techkriti, the institute's tech fest, has used the airstrip for aero-modelling flight tests (Times of India, 2015).
Nearby is the National Wind Tunnel Facility, set up in 1999, which its own site describes as capable of testing at wind speeds up to 80 m/s (NWTF).
Places worth knowing
- P. K. Kelkar Library: renamed in 2002 after the first Director, in a three-storey building of 6,973 sq m (PKK Library).
- Lecture Hall Complex, the swimming pool and the gymnasium, all listed among campus services (IIT Kanpur).
- Gliding Club, open to the campus community.

What students say
One student's "side quest" list on r/IITK doubles as a wildlife guide:
"1. Go to the terrace of every building on this campus. 2. Spot both male and female nilgai. 3. Spot both peacock and peahen. 4. Spot a wild boar in the campus. 5. Locate all the watchtowers in the campus." (r/IITK)
"Academically well oriented , greenery , sexy infra , welcoming profs ... fests , competition with buzz always around" (a first-year, r/IITK)
"The campus is really safe as compared to what I have seen otherwise" (r/IITK)
