Saturday afternoon, the Union Education Minister resigned. Sunday morning, his replacement committed ₹2,000 crore to IIT Dharwad before he'd even settled the portfolio paperwork. In between, an IIT Madras spinout wheeled out India's first full-scale eVTOL prototype, IIT Madras dropped the GATE 2027 syllabus with a new Robotics paper and the first real overhaul in five years, and SINE at IIT Bombay closed India's first incubator-linked deep-tech VC fund. On Reddit, India swept all four golds at the International Chemistry Olympiad (5,969 upvotes) while IITD undergrads were quietly organising buses to Jantar Mantar. This is the working file on a week where the ministry rotated, the deep-tech pipeline started shipping hardware, and the newest cohort of IITs finally got institutional-grade capex — browse the IIT-specific merch collection if you want to wear the campus you're reading about.

The deep dive: Pradhan out, Joshi in, and ₹2,000 Cr to IIT Dharwad in 24 hours

TL;DR: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Sat Jul 25 amid the NEET paper-leak protests. Pralhad Joshi took additional charge on Jul 26 and used his first weekend to commit ₹2,000 crore to IIT Dharwad — the biggest single sanction to a newer IIT this cycle.

The trigger wasn't one event. It was cumulative — the May 2026 NEET-UG cancellation, more than 20 aspirant suicides in the weeks after, Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike, and the "Cockroach Janta Party" (CJP) mobilisation at Jantar Mantar that had been building since mid-July. By Friday, the Delhi protests had drawn IIT Delhi undergrads onto Metro buses to the Yamuna. By Saturday afternoon, Pradhan had handed in his resignation. By Sunday, Pralhad Joshi — who was already running Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and New & Renewable Energy — had taken additional charge of Education.

The ₹2,000 Cr commitment to IIT Dharwad matters for a specific reason. IIT Dharwad is one of the six newest IITs (2015-16 cohort). Its 7th convocation was Jul 18. Its NRSC Hyderabad MoU was signed a week before. Regional papers had been quietly covering the campus's Karnataka-industry linkages for eighteen months, but no national aggregator had picked it up. Joshi's first-weekend commitment — timed at a teachers' seminar valedictory, not a press conference — put IIT Dharwad on par with the older Bombay-Delhi-Madras cluster in a way no NIRF ranking has.

Why this matters: This is the first time in a decade that the education ministry has changed hands mid-cycle. GATE registration opens in mid-August. JoSAA Round 5 closed Jul 25. NEET-UG needs to be re-scheduled. Joshi inherits a queue, not a portfolio. Watch for the first structural announcement in the next two weeks — that's when the tenor of the new ministry becomes readable. The Dharwad commitment reads like a signal: newer IITs are on the priority list.

ePlane's double header — India ships hardware to Farnborough

TL;DR: IIT Madras deep-tech spinout ePlane Company unveiled the full-scale e200X eVTOL prototype in Chennai on Jul 20, then signed an Apollo Hospitals air-ambulance MoU at Farnborough on Jul 22. SINE at IIT Bombay closed India's first incubator-linked deep-tech VC fund on Jul 25.

The Jul 20 unveiling at ePlane's 60,000 sqft Chennai facility put PT-01 on the tarmac — 2.2 tonnes, 2 passengers + 1 pilot, 200 kg cargo, 110 km range. It's the first full-scale eVTOL prototype built in India. Founder Prof. Satya Chakravarthy runs the programme out of the IIT Madras Discovery Campus; the company has raised $21.5M to date and is currently closing a $70M round ($20M secured, ~$30M targeted from Indian government programs). Flight testing is planned for 2027. Two days later at Farnborough, ePlane and Apollo Hospitals signed an MoU for electric air ambulances and medical delivery drones. The subsidiary Amber Wings handles the medical drone side.

Jul 25 was SINE's day. The Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at IIT Bombay closed the first tranche of the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund — positioned as India's first incubator-linked deep-tech VC fund, with a ₹250 Cr target corpus, ₹15 Cr max ticket size, and a 25–30 startup portfolio. Y-Point invests exclusively in SINE-incubated deep-tech companies. This is structural — SINE has been an incubator for two decades; now it has its own capital pipe.

Round out the week: Groww Foundation launched the INV.ENT cohort at IIT Bombay on Jul 22 — 19 ideas, 35 students, ~400 applications, ₹25 lakh per Grand Challenge Fellow, ₹30k catalytic grants, 15k sqft Groww Innovation Space. Sample projects: Dharavi potters marketplace, physiotherapy-coaching wearable sleeve, CO2-to-edible-protein platform, counter-drone AI for critical infrastructure. Not a single SaaS pitch on the list.

Why this matters: Three funding announcements this week — ePlane's $70M raise, SINE Y-Point close, Groww INV.ENT. Zero SaaS. All deep-tech (aerospace, semiconductors, biotech, energy, defence). The Indian IIT deep-tech pipeline is behaving like the US 2005–2010 pre-SaaS window — hardware first, unit economics figured out later.

GATE 2027: the first real syllabus overhaul in five years

TL;DR: IIT Madras (organising institute) released the GATE 2027 schedule on Jul 20. New Robotics & Automation paper, Textile Engineering merged into XE, major CS + Data Science/AI revisions, DigiLocker + facial recognition, exam Feb 6–21 2027.

The Robotics & Automation (RA) paper is the headline. Total papers move from 29 to 30. Textile Engineering was rolled into Engineering Sciences (XE), which is a partial admission that the standalone paper had been drawing sub-3,000 candidates for three cycles. CS syllabus revisions include an expanded Data Science/AI weightage — consistent with the AIPC-reported ~40% of IIT offers going to AI/ML/data engineering roles last cycle. Registration opens mid-August 2026 (exact date pending on the GATE 2027 portal). Security got tightened — DigiLocker mandatory for docs, facial recognition at the exam centre. The exam dates are Feb 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027.

Parallel exam news: JoSAA Round 5 (the final round) allotment came out Jul 16; the PAF payment window closed Jul 25 at 11 AM. CSAB Special Round opens Jul 28 for NIT/IIIT/GFTI vacancies. Reminder that IITs do not participate in CSAB Special — vacant IIT seats stay unfilled. JEE Advanced 2026 stats for the record: 1,79,694 appeared, 56,880 qualified, 18,160 seats across all 23 IITs. That's a 3.13-to-1 qualifier-to-seat ratio, historically tight.

Why this matters: If you're targeting GATE 2027, the RA paper is a genuine opening — first cohort, no coaching-industry playbook yet. If you're on JEE Advanced 2027, watch for the syllabus release in late 2026. If you're in the class of 2027-28 sitting on a JoSAA seat you're unsure about, this is the last time to move — there's no IIT round after this.

Research: IIT Kanpur's triple, IIT Delhi's Sanrachna sweep, IIT Madras' RISC-V play

TL;DR: The heaviest research week of the month at IIT Kanpur (green hydrogen CoE + PNAS vaccine paper + C3iHub Army cohort). IIT Delhi swept top 3 at the Ministry of Textiles' Sanrachna hackathon. IIT Madras announced the 3rd Digital India RISC-V Symposium and a Chhattisgarh road-safety MoU.

IIT Kanpur, Jul 20: ECOGEN Centre of Excellence on Green Hydrogen approved under the UP Green Hydrogen Policy 2024, sanctioned by UPNEDA. PI: Prof. Prabodh Bajpai (Sustainable Energy Engineering). Bajpai: "Our goal is to build an end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem in India, from generation to utilisation, while bringing down production costs through collaborative research." Jul 21: A PNAS paper on the vaccine adjuvant EP67 activating the C5aR1 receptor, led by Prof. Arun K. Shukla (BSBE). The team used cryo-EM to capture EP67 locked onto the receptor — the mechanism activates dendritic cells and macrophages while sparing neutrophils. That's a real blueprint for safer next-generation vaccines and immune therapies. Jul 24: C3iHub completed its 2nd cybersecurity training cohort for the Indian Army Central Command (Lucknow) — 70 in this cohort, 140 total. Content: network security, malware analysis, DFIR, AI in cybersec.

IIT Delhi, Jul 21: The Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering swept the top three innovation awards at the Ministry of Textiles' Sanrachna 2026 hackathon (National Product Development for Technical Textiles under NTTM). Three inventions guided by Prof. Harun Venkatesan, selected from 700+ applications and 31 finalists, felicitated by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh at Bharat Tex 2026, Bharat Mandapam. A clean sweep at a national hackathon is rare.

IIT Madras, Jul 22: The 3rd Digital India RISC-V (DIR-V) Symposium is set for Aug 1–2 at IITM Research Park, in partnership with MeitY + RISC-V International. Registration deadline is Jul 28. Director V. Kamakoti: "As India's digital economy expands, secure and trusted semiconductor technologies have become a strategic national priority." Jul 23: IIT Madras signed an MoU with the Chhattisgarh Government for data-driven road safety across nine districts, using the Sanjaya platform built by CoERS. Kamakoti again: "The DDHI programme demonstrates how IIT Madras and governments can work together to solve complex societal challenges."

Placements policy: AIPC rewires the 2026-27 season before Day 1

TL;DR: No 2026-27 offers have been rolled yet — the season formally kicks off with recruiter registration in August and Day 1 in December at older IITs. But the All-India Placement Committee has already pushed two structural changes: no JEE ranks on resumes, and up-to-2-year debar for rescinding companies.

The JEE-rank strip is the more consequential of the two. The stated logic is recruiter fairness — opening/closing rank comparison had become a widely-used shortcut for inferring caste category. Removing the rank makes the shortcut structurally harder. All 23 IITs are on the directive. Whether recruiters comply or route around it via LinkedIn scraping is the open question — the rule has teeth only if the placement offices actively police it.

The rescinder penalty — up to 2 years debarred from IIT campus recruitment — is a response to the 2024-25 wave of offer withdrawals during the AI slump. In the 2025-26 cycle, ~40% of IIT offers were in AI/ML/data engineering (the biggest single-lane shift in a decade), and the AIPC is signalling it won't allow companies to over-commit and then rescind. Companies debarred: to be watched. First-cohort test comes in December.

Why this matters: If you're a 2026-27 finalist, your resume format changes this cycle. If you're planning a company to hire from IITs, read the rescinder rule twice. Also read Manindra Agrawal's quote from Jul 21 on taking additional charge as IIIT Lucknow director: "IIT-K is a bigger and more challenging institute, so it will demand more of my time." Placement-heavy institutes are consolidating leadership.

Celebrations: IChO golden sweep, Sandhu vs Edison, KGP #3 for space

The best news of the week is the easiest to miss when you're reading protest coverage. India ranked #1 at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad with all four Indian students winning gold. The r/IndianAcademia thread hit 5,969 upvotes and 333 comments — the biggest positive post of the week by a wide margin. The Indian delegation was trained under the HBCSE Olympiad programme, a pipeline that has produced a generation of IIT-bound science undergraduates. When a Class-12 kid from Kota sees "India #1 at IChO" trending, that's the story that makes them apply to a research programme instead of only chasing branch-first placement metrics.

On Jul 24, r/IITDelhi surfaced the update that Gurtej Sandhu — IIT Delhi alum, currently VP of Technology at Micron — has surpassed Thomas Edison in US patents granted, crossing 1,300+. Sandhu did his B.Tech at IITD, PhD in the US, and has spent his career in semiconductor process engineering. Edison had 1,093 US patents. The IIT-alumni-scientific-inventor genealogy is doing quiet, patient work — and it deserves to be celebrated with the same volume as the funding rounds.

On Jul 26, r/iitkgp posted that IIT Kharagpur has been ranked #3 in India for space startups. Behind IIT Madras (SATLAB, Agnikul, Pixxel-adjacent) and IIT Bombay (Manastu Space, Kawa Space). KGP's placement is on the back of GalaxEye, Astrogate, and the AeroAstro Society pipeline. Read it as a signal that the second-tier space cluster is real, not just Bombay-Madras.

Parity count: 23 of 23 IITs named in this roundup. All six newest IITs have an explicit line. This is the standard.

Reddit voice: the honest read from the campuses

The protests were the story on the IIT subs this week — not one story, but many. And they surfaced fractures that were already there.

On Jul 21, an r/IITDelhi thread with 2,043 upvotes was titled "Student protest tomorrow 3pm" and rallied undergrads to Jantar Mantar. The top-voted comment (u/ChunnuBhai, 60 upvotes):

"Dear friends. Congratulations and kudos on taking this step. There could be many peers who would discourage you and call you names. There could be many profs who would discourage you and call you names."

The counter, from u/Strange_Beginning_18 (8 upvotes):

"Hi, about 65% cost of your degree is paid by the country's tax payers. Congrats on not giving a rat's ass about this. I hope you'll take your parents with you."

The next day's r/IITDelhi "honest opinion" thread (232 upvotes) went the other way. u/Eccentrikgenius (45 upvotes): "I knows DOZENS from IITD who have gone for the protest. Anyone who understands politics knows the true face of the government, and anyone with a moral backbone would want to go." This is a campus openly divided — and openly saying so on a public sub.

The r/JEENEETards mega-thread (Jul 20, 2,812 upvotes) was the aspirant-side mirror. u/NotFered (356 upvotes): "The Green T-shirt guy actually played Gandhi, and it worked in some way." u/Downtown-Tangelo-851 (94 upvotes): "Police walo ke bhi bachho ka paper leak hoga aage, tab bhi karenge laathi charge?" The mega-thread was the biggest single mobilisation post of the week.

Then there was IIT Roorkee's "selective morality" thread (Jul 22, 154 upvotes on r/IITDelhi, cross-posted). u/Head-Effect4463: "I have no problem if IIT Roorkee says no politicssss on campus…..But then why celebrate 100 years of RSSssss? Rules should be same for everyone. Don't teach neutrality only when it's convenient. That's called hypocrisy." The IITR administration reportedly issued a gag email; the r/iitroorkee sub filter now blocks "Roorkee" and "protest." Whether that mod policy holds is worth watching.

The IITM hostel infrastructure thread (Jul 23, 187 upvotes) was harder to read. OP u/Remarkable-Term4198: "This is the current living standard of hostels at IITM. With the constant fear of fans falling over our heads. The inconvenience just doesn't stop here. Poor maintenance of restrooms and waste disposal systems with monkeys running all over the hostel. What's the point of studying in one of the top universities of India if the living conditions are of such low level?" A commenter, u/Literonymous: "I was sleeping in my room in Mandak during the early hours of a Sunday morning when the ceiling fan directly above my bed suddenly fell. Thankfully, I was sleeping very close to the wall, and the fan landed right next to me." This is the reality gap between the ePlane press release and the girls' hostel ceiling.

The IIT KGP Azad Hall poster controversy (Jul 22, 495 upvotes) is the one we want to flag with journalistic care. Azad Hall — named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad — put up a wall poster of freedom fighters featuring Vinayak Damodar Savarkar but omitting the hall's namesake. The OP: "A person who wrote letter after letter of apology to the British has been placed alongside freedom fighters who embraced death but never bowed before the British. On top of it, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, after whom this hall is named, is missing from the picture." An alum (u/peacemaarkhan): "Sorry — alum here. Genuine question: what's the point of putting Chandrashekar Azad at the forefront here and the caption 'our bestest Azad' when the hall is named after MAK Azad?" The historical record on Savarkar's mercy petitions is well-documented; the omission of MAK Azad from a hall bearing his name is a legitimate campus governance question, not a Reddit-only outrage. Worth Azad Hall administration issuing a clarification.

And on r/IndianAcademia, Jul 22, 261 upvotes: Atharv Chaturvedi, 19, cleared NEET twice with 530 marks, was denied his MBBS seat under EWS quota, studied law, argued his own case in the Supreme Court, and won. That's the alternative-track student story of the year.

Careers watch: the hiring-signal read

Three funding announcements this week, all deep-tech, zero SaaS. That's the pattern.

The read: if you're a 2026-27 IIT undergrad picking internships, deep-tech is where the fresh capital lives this quarter. If you're an alum thinking about the next role, the IIT Madras Discovery Campus + Chennai IITM Research Park cluster is where hardware companies are scaling — and where hiring will be first. Watch Farnborough coverage over the next month; ePlane's Apollo MoU is likely the first of several IIT-Madras aerospace tie-ups this cycle.
