IIT M.Tech tuition for a regular, GATE-admitted student runs from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 a semester in 2026-27, and SC, ST and PwD students pay no tuition at any IIT in the table below. What you actually pay in the first semester is larger, because one-time fees, deposits, hostel and mess are added: roughly ₹30,000 to ₹87,000, depending on the IIT and on whether hostel and mess are bundled in. Self-financed and sponsored students pay several times more. Below is every figure we could find on the IITs' own fee sheets, with the year and a link to each.

How much are M.Tech fees at each IIT?

We found an official M.Tech fee sheet for 22 of the 23 IITs. Most are for 2026-27. Where the latest sheet is older, the year column says so. "Computed" means we added up the line items because the sheet prints no single total.

Read the last column carefully before comparing. Some IITs put hostel rent and a mess advance into the first-semester bill (Roorkee, Hyderabad, Bhilai, Guwahati). Others bill hostel and mess separately (Bombay, Madras, Patna). A low headline number can simply mean the mess is missing from it.

IIT Gandhinagar is the one gap. Its M.Tech admissions page lists programmes and the monthly scholarship but no domestic fee table, and the only fee sheet we found is for international students. Its scholarships page does say SC/ST/PwD students get a full tuition waiver, and so do students with annual parental income up to ₹2.5 lakh.

IIT Bombay M.Tech fee structure 2026-27

IIT Bombay splits students into two groups. Group I covers teaching and research assistants and government fellowship holders, which is where a GATE-admitted student on assistantship sits. Group II covers sponsored, self-finance, project staff and external students. The circular states that a "Tuition Fee concession of Rs.42000/- is included for Group-I category" (IIT Bombay fee circular, 2026-27).

Line (per the 2026-27 circular)Group I: TA/RA, fellowshipGroup II: self-financed, sponsoredSC/ST/PwD
One-time, non-refundable (admission, alumni, welfare)₹16,000₹16,000₹16,000
Refundable security deposits₹10,000₹10,000₹10,000
Tuition per semester₹18,000₹60,000Nil
Other per-semester fees (exam, gymkhana, medical, funds)₹8,150₹8,150₹8,150
First-semester academic total₹52,150₹94,150₹34,150
Hostel (₹20,250) + mess advance (₹27,000)₹47,250₹47,250₹47,250

Hostel and mess figures are from the PG hostel circular for Autumn 2026-27. So a Group I student needs about ₹99,400 for the first semester (₹52,150 + ₹47,250, computed). The ₹26,000 of one-time fees and deposits does not recur.

IIT Madras M.Tech fees 2026-27

IIT Madras charges ₹25,000 tuition a semester. Its admissions page puts it plainly: "The Institute Fee is ₹66,402/- for M.Tech candidates ... belonging to the General / EWS / OBC-NCL categories, and ₹41,402/- for both M.Tech and M.A. candidates belonging to the SC / ST / PwD categories" (IIT Madras M.Tech admissions).

That ₹66,402 is ₹21,000 of one-time fees, ₹40,402 of semester fees (including ₹7,500 seat rent and a ₹2,402 annual insurance premium) and a ₹5,000 caution deposit. The fee circular adds that "Sponsored candidates have to pay an additional tuition fee of Rs. 50,000/- per semester." Hostel charges of ₹24,750 for new M.Tech students and a mess advance of about ₹18,879 come on top (hostel circular).

IIT Patna M.Tech fee

IIT Patna's live table is headed "Fee structure for M.Tech Program with effect form July 2023 batch", and no newer M.Tech sheet is posted (IIT Patna fee structure). It charges ₹20,000 tuition a semester for regular and self-financed students and ₹40,000 for sponsored students. The first semester totals ₹84,750, which includes ₹25,000 of refundable deposits. From the second semester the bill is ₹45,000. Mess is charged separately.

The 2026-27 M.Tech advertisement says assistantships of ₹12,400 a month go to regular students with a valid GATE score, and "No assistantship will be provided to the students of Sponsored / Self-Financed and Part-time category." An older brochure on the same site showing ₹5,000 tuition is out of date.

Do SC, ST and PwD students pay M.Tech tuition?

No, not on a regular seat. Every fee sheet above that splits categories waives tuition for SC, ST and PwD students. IIT Bombay's circular says they "are exempted from the payment of Tuition Fees". They still pay everything else: one-time fees, deposits, hostel and mess. That is why IIT Madras still charges them ₹41,402 at admission.

Some IITs go further. IIT Kanpur does not charge seat rent to SC/ST students whose annual family income is below ₹6 lakh (IIT Kanpur). IIT (BHU) exempts them from hostel seat rent too. The waiver usually does not carry over to sponsored seats: IIT BHU states "No tuition Fee Waiver for Sponsored (SC/ST/PD), QIP and External students" (IIT BHU), and IIT Jodhpur says the same of self-sponsored and sponsored students (IIT Jodhpur).

Is there one government rule for IIT M.Tech tuition?

No single figure applies to all IITs, which is why tuition ranges from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000. A 2019 committee recommended that IITs "proactively increase the M.Tech fee and bring it" "at least to the level of B.Tech fee (Rs 2 lakh per year) over the next three years". In February 2021 the government shelved the hike, as ThePrint reported: "We have decided not to increase the M.Tech fees this year" (ThePrint, 24 February 2021).

Since then, individual IITs have raised fees on their own schedules. IIT Ropar's 2025-26 sheet says fees will rise "at the rate of inflation ... subject to minimum increase @5% every academic year" (IIT Ropar), and IIT Jammu raises non-tuition components 7% a year. Expect next year's figures to be a little higher.

GATE with assistantship vs self-financed vs sponsored: how much more?

The cheapest route is a regular GATE seat with an assistantship (called HTRA, HTTA or TA at different IITs). Sponsored candidates, who are released on salary by their employer, pay more. Self-financed candidates, who pay their own way without a stipend, pay the most at IITs that run that category. Tuition per semester:

IITGATE regular / assistantshipSponsoredSelf-financed or self-sponsored
Bombay₹18,000₹60,000₹60,000
Delhi₹17,500₹75,000₹75,000 (non-assistantship)
Hyderabad₹12,000₹40,000 (govt)₹2,40,000 (12 credits × ₹20,000)
Jammu₹20,000₹50,000 (Defence, QIP)₹75,000
Jodhpur₹13,000₹26,000₹45,000
Tirupati₹8,000₹8,000₹40,000
Guwahati₹15,000₹30,000; ₹5,00,000 industry-sponsoredNot listed
Patna₹20,000₹40,000₹20,000, but no assistantship

Sources: the fee sheets for Bombay, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jammu, Jodhpur, Tirupati, Guwahati and Patna. Over four semesters, a self-sponsored seat at IIT Hyderabad costs ₹9.6 lakh in tuition alone (computed). At IIT Goa the brochure groups self-financed with sponsored candidates (IIT Goa brochure), so check before assuming the regular rate.

Hostel and mess: what comes on top of the fee?

Where hostel and mess are billed separately, they often add as much again as the academic fee. Mess advances are adjusted against your actual meals, so the final figure moves a little.

IITHostel chargesMessSource
Bombay₹20,250 in semester 1 (incl. ₹5,000 deposit)₹27,000 advance a semesterhostel circular
Madras₹24,750 at admission (incl. ₹5,000 refundable)₹18,879 non-veg / ₹18,026 veg for 116 dayshostel circular
Delhi₹8,600 seat rent a semester; ₹7,000 + ₹15,000 security at entry₹36,000 a semesterprospectus, brochure
Kharagpur₹1,177 + ₹24,354 a semester₹14,500 advance a semesterbrochure

Goa₹2,000 rent + ₹3,000 establishment, inside the fee₹20,345 a semester + ₹2,000 refundablefee sheet

Budget for them as part of the cost. IIT Jodhpur, for example, says "All the students (except Part-time/Part-time online/external) are required to register as hosteller during the admission" (IIT Jodhpur).

One-time fees vs semester fees

The first-semester bill is always the biggest because it carries admission fees, alumni membership, convocation charges and refundable deposits. Those do not recur. At IIT Roorkee the first autumn semester is ₹66,400 and the next spring semester ₹49,900, both including hostel and mess (IIT Roorkee). At IIT (ISM) Dhanbad it is ₹56,400 at admission, then ₹26,700 for the winter semester before mess (IIT ISM).

IIT Kanpur publishes a full-course figure: ₹1,61,620 across four semesters for a general-category hosteller, including a 1% increment (IIT Kanpur cumulative fee sheet). Deposits of ₹5,000 to ₹26,000 come back when you leave.

Does the ₹12,400 stipend cover the fees?

For a regular GATE student, mostly yes. IIT Madras pays its M.Tech teaching assistants "at the rate of ₹12,400/- p.m." for up to 22 months (IIT Madras), and IIT Kharagpur, Palakkad, Dharwad, Ropar and Patna state the same monthly rate. Over 24 months that is ₹2,97,600 (computed), against IIT Kanpur's ₹1,61,620 four-semester bill. The first instalment is the hard part, because it is due before the first stipend arrives.

Students on r/GATEtard put it the same way:

"Given you will get stipend, the total cost is almost negligible. If you can pay the initial fees, I don't see a problem here." (r/GATEtard)
"Btw you can pay the bills with the stipend if you're a HTRA, the initial fee might be little high and the relocation logistics will slightly feel like a burden." (r/GATEtard)

Sponsored and self-financed students do not get the assistantship. Our sibling guide on the IIT M.Tech and PhD stipend covers eligibility, duty hours and tax.

How to check the fee yourself

  • Look on the IIT's academic office page, not the admissions portal. IIT Bombay's is Fees structure for prospective students, IIT Madras uses fees.iitm.ac.in.
  • Find the sheet for new entrants. Continuing students' circulars can show different figures.
  • Check whether hostel and mess are inside the total. If not, find the hostel circular.
  • Match your category: regular with assistantship, sponsored, or self-financed.
