About IIT Kharagpur
Before it was India's most storied engineering campus, it was a prison. The Hijli Detention Camp — built by the British in 1930 to jail freedom fighters — became the founding home of India's first IIT on 18 August 1951 [¹]. That origin story still runs through KGP's identity: grit, history, and scale. At roughly 2,100 acres, it is the largest IIT campus in the country — a self-contained township of 15,000+ residents [¹]. Cultural life runs equally deep: Spring Fest (1960) is the oldest college cultural festival in India [²], while Kshitij is Asia's largest techno-management fest [²].
