About IIT Roorkee

Before the IIT system existed, there was Roorkee. Founded in 1847 to train surveyors for the Ganga Canal, the Thomason College of Civil Engineering is the oldest engineering institution in Asia — older by a century than the IIT Act [¹]. It became the seventh IIT in 2001, first created by upgrading an existing university [¹]. The 365-acre Uttarakhand campus retains its colonial character: the Canal Engineer's Bungalow still stands, and the library holds a rare 1623 First Folio of Shakespeare [¹]. Student life centres on the Bhawans — Rajendra, Ganga, Cautley, Sarojini — and two signature fests: Cognizance (Asia's second-largest student tech fest, est. 2003) and Thomso (cultural fest since 1982, 40,000+ attendees) [² ³].   We are not an official vendor for Cognizance (IIT Roorkee's tech fest, running since 2003) or Thomso (the cultural fest since 1982, named after the institute's founder Sir James Thomason).
