Campus guide · IIT Guwahati · Assam

IIT Guwahati's campus covers 285 hectares, about 704 acres, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, roughly 20 km from the heart of Guwahati. It is often called one of the most beautiful IIT campuses, with hills, lakes and the river on one side, and every student gets a single room. This is the sourced guide to its size, its river-named hostels, getting there, and the one thing students always mention: the city is across the river.

How big is the IIT Guwahati campus?

The institute gives the area in hectares: "Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and lakes on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning" (IIT Guwahati campus life). That is about 704 acres, which is where the commonly quoted "700 acres" comes from.

In the July 2026 intake, first-year UG students were allotted to ten hostels, with the most going to Dhansiri, Brahmaputra and Lohit, according to the institute's own allotment list. Students say rooms are allotted before arrival so that people travelling far can come early. For fees and hostel rules across IITs, see our IIT hostel guide.

Getting there, and the river problem

The campus is in Amingaon, North Guwahati, across the Brahmaputra from the city. An older institute visitors' page put the airport at "around 40 min drive", and there is an institute bus service to and from the city (IIT Guwahati visitors page, archived).

Students mention the river every time. One put it plainly on r/IITGuwahati: "You can't have late night outings outside the campus since the city and campus are on the opposite sides of the river." (r/IITGuwahati). The cheap way across is the ferry; another student notes an auto to the ferry ghat.
