Campus guide · IIT Madras · Chennai

IIT Madras sits on a 617-acre campus in south Chennai that was carved out of Guindy National Park, and much of it is still protected forest. Blackbuck and spotted deer wander between the hostels, 22 hostels are named after Indian rivers, and the campus buses are named after mountains. This is the sourced guide: how big the campus is, the full hostel list, how to get there, and what living next to a national park is actually like.

How big is the IIT Madras campus?

IIT Madras describes itself as "a residential institute that occupies a 2.5 km² (617 acre) campus that was formerly part of the adjoining Guindy National Park" (IIT Madras campus overview). Another institute page puts it at "about 250 hectares", which is the same number in different units. You will also find "a beautiful campus spanning 630 acres" on the institute's history page, but that page's other figures (it mentions around 3,000 students) are clearly older copy. Use 617 acres.

The German link runs deep. It began when Jawaharlal Nehru was offered help by West Germany in 1956, leading to "the signing of the first Indo-German Agreement in Bonn in 1959" (IIT Madras history). It's why one of the campus roads is called Bonn Avenue.

Where is IIT Madras, and how do you get there?

"The main entrance of IIT Madras is on Sardar Patel Road, flanked by the residential districts of Adyar and Velachery. ... The campus is located 10 km from the Chennai Airport, 12 km from the Chennai Central Railway station, and is well connected by city buses. Kasturba Nagar is the nearest station on the Chennai MRTS line" (IIT Madras campus overview).

Inside, you won't walk everywhere. "Four regular buses and 10 battery-powered vehicles, named after mountain ranges and peaks in India, come every 20-30 minutes between the IN-Gate and Gajendra Circle (GC), Hostel Zone and Department Zone" (IIT Madras campus amenities).

IIT Madras hostels: the full list

Every hostel is named after a river. The Council of Wardens' current list:

Men's hostelsWomen's hostels
Alakananda, Brahmaputra, Cauvery, Ganga, Godavari, Jamuna, Krishna, Mahanadhi, Mandakini A, Mandakini B, Narmada, Pampa, Saraswathi, Sindhu, Tamiraparani, TaptiBhadra, Sabarmati, Sarayu, Sharavathi, Swarnamukhi, Tunga

Source: IIT Madras Council of Wardens hostel list. The institute's own hostel-life page still says "20 hostels ... 5 are for female and 15 are for male students", which predates the current list.

Food is centralised: "Himalaya is a giant building where all the messes are located" (IIT Madras campus overview). Students on r/iitmadras say the PhD and MS scholars' hostels (Pampa, Sindhu, Tamiraparani, Mahanadhi) are single-occupancy with a common kitchen. For fees, IIT Madras' Jul–Nov 2026 hostel fees for a new B.Tech student total ₹28,250 plus a mess advance of about ₹18,000; our IIT hostel guide has the breakdown.

Living inside a national park

"Much of the campus is a protected forest, carved out of the Guindy National Park ... The campus has the pride of having one of the most elegant antelopes in the world - the Blackbuck. The campus is also home to large numbers of chital (spotted deer), bonnet macaque, monkeys and other rare wildlife" (IIT Madras campus overview). The institute counts about 300 species of trees and plants and about 100 bird species.

The blackbuck population is growing. From "just 12 individuals in 2018 to 77 today", per IIT Madras figures reported by Moneycontrol in May 2026.

The wildlife shapes daily rules. Students on r/iitmadras explain that fast food-delivery riders can only come as far as Gajendra Circle and a few gates, not into the hostel zone:

"Swiggy/Zomato/Blinkit are available upto certain points (Gajendra Circle, T Gate etc). These are fast deliveries which makes the delivery person to ride faster (past incidents of deer accidents made them to block zomato and Swiggy inside)." (r/iitmadras)

That is a student's explanation rather than an official one, but monkeys are a constant in every account. One alumnus remembers a hostel dog that "used to stay at my door and drive away the monkeys" (r/iitmadras). Keep windows shut and food out of sight.
