IIT Madras opened the 2025–26 placement season on 1 December 2025 with 300+ registered companies plus 100+ mature startups — the largest Day 1 pool in institute history. Approximately 2,000 candidates are on the list; Phase 2 (January–May 2026) added another ~100 companies. The CDC framing for the season, verbatim from CollegeDekho's Day 1 report: "The Institute has more core companies, including public sector undertakings, participating this year compared to the previous year." Full 2025–26 outcome data lands July–August 2026 when the CDC publishes; this post is updated the moment it does.

Meanwhile, the last completed cycle sets the ceiling to beat. In December 2024, at the start of the 2024–25 season, Jane Street extended a ₹4.3 crore pre-placement offer to a CSE student for a Quantitative Trader role in Hong Kong — the highest offer ever recorded at the institute. 25 students crossed the ₹1 crore mark. Three firms (BlackRock, Glean, Da Vinci) extended offers above ₹2 crore. The B.Tech CSE median was ₹46 LPA, average ₹53.2 LPA. Here is what the data actually shows across both cycles, atom by atom, with the sources.

The 2024–25 ceiling: the ₹4.3 crore Jane Street PPO — what actually happened

In December 2024, at the start of IIT Madras''s Phase 1 (Session 1.1) recruitment, Jane Street extended a pre-placement offer to a CSE student for a Quantitative Trader role based in Hong Kong. Per Dhanamonline: "This pay package, which includes salary, bonus, and relocation costs, is the highest offer made to an IIT Madras student this year."

The PPO followed an internship with Jane Street. It is a compound package — salary, fixed bonus, and relocation, together — not a single line item. And it is the largest offer ever recorded at IIT Madras: BusinessToday''s July 2025 retrospective confirmed: "The staggering pre-placement offer, extended during the last IIT Madras placement season, was the highest package recorded at the institute in December 2024."

What the offer tells you about the CSE end of Madras: the quant-finance ceiling is now above traditional Big Tech. Jane Street competes for the same students who once treated Google or Facebook as the ceiling. The Hong Kong seat also signals the geographic shift — quant firms are placing top-tier IIT talent in Asian trading offices as a matter of routine, not exception.

The 2024–25 numbers in full (the last completed cycle, for reference)

For headline numbers, we work with 2024–25 data because 2025–26 outcomes have not been publicly released as of this writing. The CDC website tabs exist but raw batch data is not public without login, so the numbers below aggregate multiple secondary sources that align with each other.

CSE at IIT Madras: median ₹46 LPA, average ₹53.2 LPA

The single number that changes JEE ranking behaviour: Computer Science and Engineering median compensation. Per CollegeDekho''s pre-season 2025–26 stats piece:

  • B.Tech CSE median: ₹46.0 LPA (2024–25)
  • B.Tech CSE average: ₹53.2 LPA
  • M.Tech CS average: ₹29 LPA · median: ₹24.6 LPA (per Cracku)
  • Overall (all branches) average: ₹22 LPA · median: ₹19.6 LPA

The CSE-to-overall spread is roughly 2.7× at the median (₹46 vs ₹19.6) and 2.4× at the average — the widest branch premium the institute has publicly disclosed. That spread is what drives every "should I take Madras Chemical or a lower IIT''s CSE?" decision on r/JEENEETards.

Sector split and the recruiter constellation

The most recent granular sector breakdown available is from 2022–23 CDC data (via GetMyUni): Core Engineering 27.6%, IT 14.9%, Consulting 14.3%, Software 13.2%, R&D 12.1%, Analytics 10.9%, remaining ~7% Finance/FMCG/other. For 2024–25, only rough approximations are public — Adda247''s cycle summary noted "40% of students placed at IIT Madras placements in 2024 were offered positions in the Core sector, with 20% of offers going to the Software sector" — which suggests a mild rebalance toward core relative to the 2022–23 mix.

The recruiter constellation for 2024–25 (per CollegeDekho and CampusUtra): Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Adobe, Deloitte on the mainstream tech + finance side; BlackRock, Glean, Da Vinci, APT Portfolio, Rubrik, Databricks, Ebullient Securities, IMC Trading on the ₹1 Cr+ quant/hedge-fund side. Microsoft''s headline offer was ₹50 lakh+ — the reference point for a "mid-Big-Tech" ceiling at Madras.

International offers

IIT Madras made 44 international offers during the 2023–24 season (Phase I + II), per CDC-cited data. Confirmed international recruiters across recent cycles include Jane Street (Hong Kong), Optiver, Da Vinci, Cohesity, Rubrik. Country-level breakdowns are not public — most non-Jane-Street offers are US-headquartered firms placing students in India or wider Asia. For 2024–25, no consolidated international offer count has been released; the ₹4.3 Cr Jane Street PPO was the international ceiling.

The 2025–26 season: largest Day 1 pool on record, outcomes still pending

2025–26 recruitment began on 1 December 2025 with more institutional participation than any prior IIT Madras cycle. Per CollegeDekho''s Day 1 report: 300+ registered companies plus 100+ mature startups, ~2,000 student candidates. The CDC framing per that release: "The Institute has more core companies, including public sector undertakings, participating this year compared to the previous year." Phase 2 (January–May 2026) added another ~100 companies.

What has not been released as of July 2026: any offer count, package data, hire count by recruiter, or aggregate placement rate for the 2025–26 season. The CDC typically publishes the official press-release summary in July–August following each cycle. When it lands, this post gets updated.

  • Average package: ₹21.48 LPA (2023–24) → ₹22 LPA (2024–25). ~2.4% nominal uplift; effectively flat.
  • Median package: ₹19.6 LPA, unchanged.
  • PPO count: up 10–20% YoY. But so were rejections — Careers360''s IIT-wide 2025–26 preview reported "IIT Madras witnessed a 10-20% increase in the number of PPOs, but rejections also surged 10-15% compared to last year". Students appear to be negotiating rather than accepting the first PPO on the table.
  • Company base: 256 companies (2023–24) → 300+ (2024–25) → 300+ registered + 100+ startups (2025–26 Day 1). Consistent broadening.
  • Sector rebalance: Careers360 flagged "a shift towards AI and digital product firms, but with lower salaries from last year" as the IIT-wide read. Madras has not published cycle-specific sector deltas to confirm.

What this actually means if you got IIT Madras via JoSAA 2026

Three practical reads.

  1. If you took CSE, the ₹4.3 Cr number is not typical — but ₹46 LPA median is. The Jane Street PPO is one CSE student in one cycle. The compound expected value that shows up for most CSE grads is nearer the median. Bank on ₹46 LPA, plan for the top-decile ceiling as a stretch.
  2. If you took a non-CSE branch, the overall ₹22 LPA average is your realistic anchor. The 2.4× CSE-to-overall spread is real. Non-CSE branches at Madras still get placed well, but the compensation base is materially different from the CSE headline number.
  3. The 2025–26 outcome data is coming. If your incoming batch is graduating in 2026 or 2027, watch for the CDC''s July–August 2026 release. This post will be updated with the numbers when they land.
