Somewhere in an IIT hostel, a rising fourth-year opens up the MITACS Globalink Research Internship page for the fifteenth time this month and reads the same line: "The application call is now closed, and we're no longer taking applications for summer 2026. The call for summer 2027 will open soon!" He tabs over to DAAD's official scholarship database and finds the WISE programme detail page returning "This programme is not available right now." Charpak's 2026 call is closed. Viterbi-India's deadline was 31 December 2025. Khorana's 2026 cycle hasn't been announced. SN Bose is on hold. Every marquee foreign summer research programme an IITian would target this year is either past its 2026 deadline or has quietly gone dark for Indian applicants. If you missed the Sep–Dec 2025 window, you have missed 2026. Two structural clarifications worth making since aggregator content muddles them: MIT MISTI is not an option for IITians. MISTI flows MIT-enrolled students to India for placements — it's outbound-only. "The MIT-India program matches MIT students with internships and research at leading companies, research labs, non-profits, and academic institutes in India" is MISTI's own description. Similarly, most Cornell NSF-funded summer REUs restrict applicants to US citizens or permanent residents — "Applicants must be current undergraduates who will not graduate before August 2026, and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents" is the Cornell Molecular Biology REU page. Any aggregator listing MISTI or Cornell REUs as an IITian pathway is wrong.
Why did MITACS and DAAD both shut for India?
MITACS Globalink: the answer is diplomatic. India-Canada relations have been in a well-documented freeze since 2023, and Mitacs — a federally-funded Canadian research programme — pauses on India happen alongside that context. Mitacs itself signed a fresh 3-year MoU with AICTE on 2 March 2026 to restart the India track, and the "first cohort under the renewed agreement arrives in Canada in summer 2027." If you're a current second-year at an AICTE-approved institute, you're the target audience for the Sep 2026 application window. The AICTE-Mitacs India track funds 300 Indian undergraduates per financial year, with total programme cost of CAD 12,000 per student (CAD 9,000 from Mitacs + CAD 3,000 from AICTE), covering airfare, visa, medical, stipend, and accommodation.
One catch worth flagging: Mitacs' own page states the India GPA floor is 70%. AICTE's scheme guidelines specify 85% CGPA in second year as the effective shortlist bar. Plan for 85%.
DAAD WISE: the answer is quieter — DAAD hasn't published a discontinuation notice, but the WISE detail page on DAAD's official scholarship database now returns "This programme is not available right now." DAAD India's own Internships and Short-Term Programmes page no longer lists WISE by name. Community consensus on r/Btechtards mid-2025 was that DAAD's funding for the India track had lapsed. DAAD's sibling programme RISE Germany remains active for 2027 at EUR 992/month, but it's restricted to "undergraduates enrolled at universities in the United States, Canada, the UK or Ireland" — Indian students on Indian passports at IIT campuses cannot substitute RISE for WISE.
What r/Btechtards is actually doing about it
The community diagnosis is more matter-of-fact than the aggregator SERPs suggest. A June 2025 r/Btechtards user posted the moment they discovered the Mitacs shutdown: "Yeah like I was going through the cgpa criteria thing, and boom they hit me with a 'Due to the termination of agreements with Mitacs's international partners in India, students enrolled in Indian institutions are not eligible for GRI 2025.'" An August 2025 follow-up summed the mood: "Yes as of now DAAD and mitacs are both closed for Indian students, I honestly don't know what to do now / I have been meaning to intern there since I've been in my first year and now that i am of the age to apply, both are not open, this sucks man."
The most upvoted response in that thread was an unexpectedly counterintuitive take. From an r/Btechtards user who had actually turned down both WISE and MITACS in a prior year to take a domestic R&D internship: "MITACS discontinued because of India-Canada relations. DAAD redistributed funds elsewhere (I think the WISE program only had funding for some years that recently expired?). Do try finding local opportunities tho, especially the rare good ones. I had rejected both WISE and MITACS for an R&D internship in India and that ended up being a good decision." Their rationale, in a follow-up comment: "The Indian internship led to an international patent and a direct LoR from a high position guide. Would have been a comparatively lesser chance of publishing something from these programs as a top author, and I might have worked with the PhD/postdocs more than the Prof."

This is the least-marketed pathway in the SERP and the most quantitatively defensible one for aspiring PhD applicants: a domestic R&D internship at an IIT lab your own professor recommends, where you are the sole undergrad on the paper, produces stronger PhD-application ammunition than being one of 40 international summer scholars at a US university where your senior author is a postdoc.
What actually opens between now and Dec 2026
If you are a current second- or third-year IITian reading this in August 2026, the pipelines that are practically actionable are:
- Cold-email your own IIT professors for winter or summer 2027 slots. Same-campus internships don't have a portal deadline — you email a prof, describe a project, get a seat. See mechanics section below.
- Domestic R&D internship at another IIT. Every IIT has an SPO-run summer research programme (IIT Bombay's Institute Summer Research Fellowship, IIT Kanpur SURGE, IIT Madras Summer Fellowship Programme, IIT Delhi UGRIA). Typical application window: December to February. Stipend Rs 6,000 to Rs 15,000/month.
- Asia-Pacific alternates. As an r/Btechtards user summarised: "Look into TEEP Taiwan, NTU-India Connect, Aalto University Asci, CUHK Summer internship. Some Taiwanese universities like NTU have some summer research programs. South Korean universities too have some programs like GIST Global Internship. Australia's ANU has some program I remember." These pipelines are smaller than MITACS or WISE were, but they're open, they pay, and they carry weight in application review. Verify current cycle deadlines on each host institution's own website.
- Company R&D internships in India. Adobe MDSR, IBM Research India, Microsoft Research India (MSRI Summer Research Fellowship), Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore, and Uber ATG India all run structured summer research programmes with monthly stipends in the Rs 60,000 to Rs 1,20,000 range. Application windows are typically October to December for the following summer.

Do not trust aggregator content — the current top three Google results for "daad wise 2026 stipend" are still selling a EUR 750/month "2026 cycle" that DAAD itself no longer runs.
The cold-email + LoR mechanics (this is what actually gets you in)
The gate that stops most IITians from landing any research internship — foreign or domestic — is not GPA. It's the professor reference. From an r/Btechtards user's candid confession in April 2025: "Every such internship I've come across asks for references from the professor, that's the hardest part for me because I made the mistake of not building a good relationship with my professors."
Four rules pulled from actual successful cold-emailers on r/Btechtards:
- Timing: start 4-5 months before the internship window. One user who successfully cold-emailed his way into an IIT summer research programme put it plainly: "You can start tomorrow. Do it asap. You're supposed to do it 4-5 months earlier. It's okay, you can email them even now."
- Read three to four of the professor's papers before you email. Then pitch a specific mini-project. A May 2026 comment spelled the tactic out: "There are 100 n 100s of mails rotting in profesors mailbox specially when there is high demand for them... For ex i want to reasearch under professor x of iisc and his research interests is related to integral protein and protein structure so i will basically take my time and read his 3-4 papers properly then will create prediction model... a protein with protein interaction ppi using gnns... for my portfolio." A concrete pitch beats generic interest by an order of magnitude.
- Use your own IIT professor as a proxy. Rather than cold-emailing a lab you have no connection to, ask a professor in your own department to introduce you. From the same thread: "Idk about your college tier but for us we ask professors for help.... They really have good connections and although they are thode se sanki but they really help.... Take lor and research the professor under whom you want to work.... It is more than enough to get a interview chance atleast."
- Portal apply = on-site only; cold email = remote possible. One under-appreciated tactical insight: "If you apply through the link, then mostly they don't allow you remote internship but if you contact the prof through cold mail, then there might be a chance for a remote internship." If you need flexibility, cold email is the only route that opens it.
You do not need prior publications or existing LoRs to land your first research seat via cold email. From a recent July 2026 comment by the same user: "Not necessarily. In my case, I didn't have prior research experience or recommendation letters. Professors usually look at your interest, your basics, and whether you're willing to learn. Having research experience or recommendations can strengthen your profile, but they're not mandatory, especially if you're cold emailing. Just be honest about your current level and keep building your profile over time."
What current IITians can actually do this week
- Pick three professors — one at your own IIT, one at another IIT, one at a foreign university — whose research overlaps with what you want to spend your career doing.
- Read three to four papers from each. Not skim — read.
- Send one cold email per week for the next three weeks. Each email: (a) one paragraph on which of their papers you read and why it grabbed you, (b) one paragraph on a specific mini-project you could contribute to over a 10-week window, (c) attach your CV + latest transcript, (d) name your availability window (summer 2027 = May-Aug 2027).
- Even if two of the three don't reply, one interview is enough. Even if all three don't reply, the emails you sent become the muscle memory for the 2027 formal application cycle in November.
The gap between an IITian who lands a good research summer and one who doesn't is not talent, GPA, or the health of MITACS. It is whether they started their emails in August or in December.
