Campus guide · IIT Hyderabad · Kandi, Sangareddy
IIT Hyderabad's campus covers 576 acres of land at Kandi in Sangareddy district, about 64 km from Hyderabad's airport, and it has 23 hostel blocks. The institute was set up in 2008, ran out of a temporary campus at the Ordnance Factory estate for its first years, and moved to Kandi from 2015. Much of what stands there was built with Japanese loan support. This guide covers the official area figures, the full hostel list, how to get there, and photos, each linked to its source.
How big is the IIT Hyderabad campus?
The figure to use is 576 acres. In the sustainability data IITH filed for NIRF 2026, the "Total Land Area (Acres)" is "576.000" for each of 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 (IITH NIRF 2026 sustainability data). The same table puts the green area at 270 acres in 2024-25, up from 145 acres in 2022-23.
You will also see 600 acres. The IITH Brochure 2026 lists a "600 Acre Campus", and the IITH Annual Report 2023-24 says "The IITH campus spans 600 acres, designed to eventually accommodate 20,000 students". The NIRF filing gives a "Total Campus Area" of 599.16 acres, so 600 is a rounded figure that includes more than the core land parcel. The older institute site used 576 throughout: "IITH has a sprawling campus of 576 acres abutting the Hyderabad-Pune/Mumbai national highway" (IITH campus page (archived March 2019)).

Where is IIT Hyderabad, and why is it in Kandi?
Despite the name, IIT Hyderabad is not in Hyderabad city. Its address is Kandi, Sangareddy, on the national highway towards Mumbai, outside the Outer Ring Road. The institute says it was "established in 2008" (About IITH).
The first batches studied at a temporary campus. The IITH Annual Report 2014-15 describes activities "both in the temporary campus located at ordnance factory and at the permanent campus in Kandi from the beginning of 2015". The 2015-16 report still mentions students cleaning "the hostel area in the Ordnance Factory (ODF) campus", so the move happened in stages.
The Kandi site was planned as a township. A 2017 institute page said the campus would house "a total population of 30,000, including 20,000 students with a total built up area of 2.1 million square meters" (IITH campus development page (archived 2017)). In February 2024 the Prime Minister dedicated a campus development project "collectively valued at Rs 1600 Cr", which included the International Guest House, Convention Centre and Technology Incubation Park (IITH Annual Report 2023-24).

How to reach IIT Hyderabad
The institute's directions: from the airport (64 km), "Get on ORR in Gandiguda", take "Exit 3 at Muthangi", then "NH 65 – IITH on right" (IITH: How to Reach). By metro, it suggests changing at Ameerpet and getting down at Miyapur. By MMTS local train, go Secunderabad to Lingampally, then bus to Patancheru and on to Sangareddy.
The campus runs its own buses: "There are regular services from the nearest railway station Lingampally to the campus and back" (IITH campus services). The timetable is on the IITH bus schedule page.

|---|---|---|
| Rajiv Gandhi International Airport | 64 km | IITH: How to Reach |
| Secunderabad Railway Station | 50 km (2019 page) | IITH campus page (archived March 2019) |
| Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station | 54 km (2019 page) | IITH campus page (archived March 2019) |
| HITEC City | 38 km (2019 page) | IITH campus page (archived March 2019) |

Students on r/IITHyderabad suggest an RTC bus to Lingampally and then the airport Pushpak bus from Gachibowli for a cheaper airport run:
"just catch a normal rtc bus to lingampalli , from there take an auto/bus to gachibowli flyover, from there i can guarantee for every 30 mins youll get a pushpak bus to airport" (r/IITHyderabad, July 2024)
Visiting as a parent or aspirant? IITH runs a guided campus visit "Every Saturday", two hours long, in slots between 9 AM and 5 PM. "Visits are conducted only through prior online registration. Walk-ins are not permitted" (Visit IITH).
IIT Hyderabad hostels: the full list
The IITH Hostel Coordinating Unit says "There are 23 hostel blocks" and that "Most students get individual rooms with a cot, study table, cupboard, and radiant cooling system." The blocks are named after Indian scientists, mathematicians and thinkers.
| Boys' hostel blocks | Girls' hostel blocks |
|---|---|
| Charaka, Susruta, Kautilya, Vyasa, Brahmagupta, Varahamihira, Ramanuja, Vivekananda, SN Bose, Ramanujan, Raman, Kalam, Bhabha, Sarabhai, Visweswaraya | Aryabhatta, Bhaskara, Maitreyi, Gargi, Kalpana Chawla, Anandi, Sarojini Naidu |
| Kapila (project staff and interns) | Kapila (project staff and interns) |
Source: IITH Hostel Coordinating Unit. The same page says "16 for boys and 6 for girls", but its own lists name 15 boys' blocks, 7 girls' blocks and Kapila, which appears on both lists. That makes 23 distinct names.
Not every room is single. Per the HCU, "Kalpana Chawla, Ramanuja, Vivekananda, and SN Bose blocks have double‑sharing rooms, while the Kapila block is dual sharing for Non‑Regular Students." Food runs through two messes: "Mess A & Mess B serve hostel clusters. Residents can opt for either mess monthly, subject to capacity" (HCU facilities page). The same page lists outlets such as Domino's, Udipi and Coffee Katha near the hostel clusters.
Some new arrivals have spent their first weeks in Kapila before moving. One student wrote that "I had to stay in Kapila for like 1.5-2 weeks before we were allotted new hostels" (r/IITHyderabad, July 2024). For what to pack and how room allotment works at IITs in general, see our IIT hostel guide for freshers.

The Japanese connection, and why the buildings look the way they do
Japan's role is physical, not only academic. JICA says its cooperation with IITH "was based on the commitment between the Prime Ministers of the two countries in 2007. The first academic block at the IIT Hyderabad campus was being built with assistance from JICA under Japan's ODA loan" (JICA press release, September 2023). The IITH Annual Report 2023-24 adds that "Phase-II construction activities supported by JICA have been completed".
It shows up in daily life too. "Shiru Cafe @ the IITH campus is the first one outside Japan. The Cafe is manned by Japanese student interns and offers free beverages to IITH fraternity" (IITH campus services). The institute also runs a Japan Desk, which it calls "the first of its kind among IITs".
The buildings are designed around the heat. The IITH Annual Report 2023-24 says "All buildings meet the GRIHA Green Buildings rating 4, with energy-efficient features like exposed concrete, radiant cooling technology, performance double-glazed units for windows". Several blocks, including the Computer Science building (AD-2) and the Lecture Hall Complex, appear in the portfolio of Christopher Charles Benninger Architects. IITH's IITH Sustainability page lists a 4.2 MW solar plant; the 2026 brochure gives the figure as about 5 MW.

What is on campus?
The IITH Brochure 2026 lists these campus facilities, among others:
- 24x7 hospital and pharmacy, plus speciality clinics.
- Banks: SBI, Canara, HDFC and ICICI.
- Olympic-size swimming pool and indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
- Open Air Theatre with a 40x20 ft LED screen.
- Supermarket, post office and a cafeteria with outlets including Domino's and Chennai Coffee Shop.
- Autonomous vehicle for campus transport.
The library moved into its own building in 2024. The brochure says it was "rebranded as the Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC) and relocated to its brand new building on March 27 2024", and that it "Spans 9,325.61 Sq. mt. (100,380 Sq. ft.) across Ground + 3 Floors" (IITH Brochure 2026).

There is new forest too. The IITH Annual Report 2024-25 records: "ICICI Foundation: Completed Miyawaki plantation of 34,800 plants in 3.48 acres."

What students say about living there
"Only table, chair, bed is provided. You'll have to bring curtains. For new joinings they put up a shop right below the hostels for everything (mattresses, pillows, dustbins ,etc)" (r/IITHyderabad, July 2024)
"Other than the issues of double sharing, the hostel is good enough. I stayed there for 4 months. You might face issues in April due to heat though." (r/IITHyderabad, June 2024)
Food delivery has limits. Another student explained that "Swiggy and Zomato come at the main gate and you have to collect it from there" (r/IITHyderabad, July 2025). These are individual accounts, not institute rules, and hostel allotment changes as new blocks open.
