The week in one paragraph
The week the nuclear-power grid, the payments bank sector, and the Indian AI research stack all showed up at IIT Bombay's front gate — three MoUs signed in 48 hours. Meanwhile IIT Bhubaneswar broke its own placement record with 500+ offers; IIT Madras shipped a cooling-tech breakthrough, an MSME-AI partnership with Tamil Nadu, and closed the first BIMSTEC hackathon; IIT Delhi rolled out the first Hindi speech-therapy protocol for stroke patients with AIIMS; and CSAB opened its Special Round for 15,423 vacant seats. Deep dive — The week nuclear, banking, and AI all landed at IIT Bombay
Between Monday 28 July and Tuesday 29 July, IIT Bombay signed three institutional MoUs across three different strategic sectors — a cadence the campus has not hit in a single week in recent memory. Each one names a different centre inside IITB; each one names a different partner. Read together, they are the map of what the institute is being asked to solve for the country.

Why this matters. Two of the three are AI MoUs — but they route through completely different IITB centres (a defence-tech centre for banking; an applied-AI centre for nuclear ops). The NPCIL twin-signing is unusual: one civil-engineering hard-problem (soil stabilisation for a Haryana PHWR site) and one AI-ops problem, signed the same day. Institutionally, that is NPCIL saying it does not want to pick "either an engineering partner or an AI partner" — it wants both from the same campus. And the NSDL/BharatGen deal is the first time BharatGen (India's public LLM initiative) has surfaced in a payments-bank cybersecurity MoU with an IIT. This is the shape of an institute being treated as a national-industrial utility rather than a research boutique — and it happened in one week.
IIT Bhubaneswar breaks its own placement record — 500+ offers in 2025-26
TL;DR: Highest placement tally in the institute's history. UG median CTC ₹15.3 lakh, PG median ₹11.2 lakh, UG placement rate above 85%.
Reported Friday 1 August — "IIT Bhubaneswar has achieved a significant milestone by recording more than 500 campus placements during the 2025–26 placement season, marking the highest placement tally in the institute's history," per IBG News, corroborated by Orissa Diary the same day. Director Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar credited "sustained emphasis on academic excellence, research-driven education, and strong collaboration with industry."
Why this matters. Bhubaneswar is one of the second-gen IITs (2008 cohort) that regularly gets treated as a filler in "best IIT" listicles. A 500-offer benchmark with a UG median of ₹15.3 lakh puts the placement mix within striking distance of much older campuses — and gives aspirants who ranked outside the top 6 IITs a genuine reason to pick Bhubaneswar over a mid-tier NIT.
IIT Madras' triple play — cooling, MSMEs, and BIMSTEC in one week
TL;DR: A device-physics paper, a state-government MSME MoU, and the first-ever multinational AI hackathon on IITM turf — all in five working days.
Sunday 27 July, IIT Madras Mechanical Engineering announced a new Flat Plate Pulsating Heat Pipe (FPPHP) design — an antiparallel-channel layout with O-ring sealing that cuts thermal resistance by 16% at higher heat inputs; aluminium versions ran ~20% cooler than copper. Lead: Prof. Arvind Pattamatta + Dr. Pallab Sinha Mahapatra, with co-authors from SSN College and DRDO's IRDE Dehradun. Applications: EVs, data centres, defence electronics.
Tuesday 29 July, IIT Madras partnered with FaMe TN — the Tamil Nadu State bureau for facilitating MSMEs — to build a State-level MSME Digital Readiness and Adoption Index, with CSR funding from Walmart Global Tech. IIT Delhi × AIIMS × IHBAS — the first Hindi speech-therapy protocol for stroke patients
TL;DR: Six stroke survivors. Forty sessions each. All exceeded the clinically-meaningful improvement threshold.
Published in Aphasiology, reported by IIT Delhi on 28 July: the first Hindi adaptation of Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT) for post-stroke aphasia. Prof. N. M. Anoop Krishnan and Prof. Rahul Garg (IITD NRCVEE) worked with Prof. Deepti Vibha at AIIMS Delhi, plus researchers at IHBAS. Prof. Garg on the outcome: "Patients were able to string together longer sentences, spoke more freely, and reported gains in their quality of life. There were no adverse effects." The team flags the sample as small — this is preliminary signal, not final proof — but it is the first Hindi-language MIT protocol on record.
IIT Delhi × Ministry of Textiles — Handloom 4.0, ₹11.99 Cr, and the CoE lining up
TL;DR: 2,500+ hackathon participants closed out Saturday. Union Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurating the Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology at IITD on Monday 3 August.
The PIB release Saturday 2 August confirmed the Handloom Hackathon 2.0 closing at IIT Delhi with 2,500+ participants and 100 shortlisted teams. Development Commissioner (Handlooms) Dr. M. Beena used the podium to formalise the doctrine: "Institutional partnerships with premier institutions such as IITs and NIFTs can develop technological solutions that reduce manual effort, integrate scientific precision into traditional weaving processes and enhance the livelihoods of weavers." The new IITD Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology — Dr. Deepti Gupta from Textile & Fibre Engineering leading — comes with a ₹11.99 Cr Ministry commitment over five years for loom modernisation, AI, sustainability, and a HandloomX startup accelerator.
IIT Hyderabad — two faculty honours and a new Sanskrit motto
TL;DR: J.C. Bose Grant, Nina Saxena Award, and a rebrand — all in 48 hours.
Wednesday 29 July, IIT Hyderabad confirmed Prof. Kirti Chandra Sahu (Chemical Engineering) had been awarded the J.C. Bose Grant (formerly J.C. Bose Fellowship) by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation for a five-year period. Same day: Dr. Nishanth Dongari (MAE) selected for the Nina Saxena Excellence in Technology Award 2026, part of IIT Kharagpur's Platinum Jubilee awards slate. Thursday 30 July, IITH unveiled its new official Sanskrit motto — नवोन्मेषेण देशनिर्माणम् ("Nation Building through Innovation") — alongside a refreshed logo. Small, cumulative signals of an institute clarifying what it wants to stand for.
IIT Kharagpur's institutional triple — MTech, Leeds, NALSAR
TL;DR: Skip GATE if you're an IITian with 8.0+ CGPA. Sign a $50K matched seed with Leeds. Cross the tech-law aisle to NALSAR. All in 48 hours.
Monday 28 July: IIT Kharagpur launched its Director's Platinum Jubilee Scheme expanding MTech intake for 2026-27 in emerging-tech and interdisciplinary departments — IIT graduates with CGPA 8.0+ can apply without GATE. Tuesday 29 July: a strategic MoU with the University of Leeds including a jointly funded seed of up to USD 50,000 matched from each institution, plus joint teaching and student exchange. Same day, the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law at IITKGP signed a cross-domain MoU with NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad — IP law + technology law + innovation policy. Tech ↔ law-school MoUs are rare in India; this one is a template worth watching.
The AI + mobility MoU pair — Gandhinagar × IAIRO, Ropar × ICAT
TL;DR: Two newer IITs signed institutional MoUs the same Wednesday. One goes into GIFT-City AI research. One goes into EV and hydrogen mobility.
Thursday 30 July, IIT Gandhinagar signed an MoU with the Indian AI Research Organisation — IAIRO sits in GIFT City next door — to jointly pursue AI projects, apply for grants, build AI infrastructure via external funding, and run certificate programmes. IITGN Director Prof. Rajat Moona: "AI is already changing the game in sectors like healthcare, life sciences and drug discovery, and will continue to expand across sectors." Same day, IIT Ropar signed with the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) — a National Automotive Board unit under the Ministry of Heavy Industries — to develop EV and hydrogen-powered mobility technologies. Signed by Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director IIT Ropar, with ICAT Director Saurabh Dalela.
IIT Jammu's double week — Army MoU and a 2.2 MWp campus microgrid EOI
TL;DR: The newest IIT that showed up loudest this week.
Monday 28 July, IIT Jammu signed a MoU with the Indian Army's Northern Command during NAVARAMBH'26 — the institute's inaugural foundation course — formalising mission-oriented defence R&D "to develop cutting-edge solutions for niche operational challenges faced by the Armed Forces." A day earlier, on Sunday 27 July, IITJ had issued an EOI for a 2.2 MWp hybrid solar-PV + 8 MWh battery microgrid at its Jagti campus — 1 MWp rooftop, 1.2 MWp on elevated pathways, LFP battery preferred, and structured to double as a live research microgrid. Together these two moves position Jammu — one of the six newest IITs — as unusually operationally-mature for its age.
Aspirant utility — CSAB Special Round opens for 15,423 seats
TL;DR: Registration open 28 July, closes Sunday 3 August. Does NOT include IITs. First-round result 6 August.
CSAB opened its Special Round on 28 July with 114 participating institutes and 15,423 vacant NIT/IIIT/IIEST/SPA/GFTI seats. Mock allotment landed 31 July; registration window closes 3 August; first-round allotment result on 6 August. Note the ceiling — this does not include IITs, which closed with JoSAA Round 5. This is the safety net for JEE Main aspirants who came out of JoSAA without a seat and still want a govt-funded engineering programme this year.
A senior policy figure on IIT Madras — "the most interesting intellectual cluster in India right now"
TL;DR: Three days on campus. One public compliment. Four projects named.
Tuesday 29 July, Sanjeev Sanyal — member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council — posted on X after a three-day visit to IIT Madras: "The place is the most interesting intellectual cluster in India right now. Just amazing things are happening there." Business Today reported the visit and the projects Sanyal namechecked: the ANCHOR brain-mapping atlas, Agnikul's launch programme, the ePlane drone-taxi project, and the indigenous marine engine initiative. Four IITM-linked projects in one post from a sitting policy figure is worth noting on its own.
The rare positive Reddit atom — IIT Madras BS student → DFKI Germany
From r/IndianAcademia on 31 July (224 upvotes): "From winning Smart India Hackathon to an ISRO internship and now a research position at Germany's DFKI: IIT Madras BS student Divyanshu Mishra's journey is remarkable." Thread. Worth flagging because the IIT Madras BS in Data Science + Applications — an online-first degree launched in 2020 that many still dismiss as "not a real IIT" — is now producing students who are landing at Germany's DFKI (Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz). The programme model works. The narrative just hasn't caught up.
The heaviest section — three IIT campus deaths between 26 and 29 July
This is not a story anyone wants to write and it is not a story anyone wants to read. But three distinct, verified deaths landed across three IIT campuses in four days, and pretending they did not happen would be worse than covering them badly. We are naming institutes and dates only. We are not naming the deceased — the family-grief window is too fresh, even where mainstream press has already named — and we are avoiding the ranked-list framing that turns tragedy into content.
IIT Guwahati — Sunday 26 July. A third-year BTech Computer Science student was found dead inside the institute's academic complex. Kamrup Police are treating the case as a suspected suicide, per India Today NE and ETV Bharat (both filed 27 July). The institute has confirmed the death and is awaiting the police findings.
IIT Bombay — Wednesday 29 July. A 20-year-old second-year BTech Material Science student was found in his room in Hostel No. 4. Powai Police have filed Accidental Death Report ADR 83/2026 under Section 194 BNSS 2023, per Careers360 and India TV News. This is a distinct case from the Hostel 4 death in February 2026 and from the widely-reported Hostel 17 case from August 2025 — both of which continue to surface as top Google results and are not this week.
IIT Kharagpur — Wednesday 29 July. A 36-year-old Assistant Professor from the Department of Electrical Engineering was found hanging in his room in the faculty quarters, per The Hans India and Deccan Chronicle. Police are investigating. Institute sources have noted that student suicide cases have occurred on the Kharagpur campus in recent years but a faculty death by suicide on campus is, at this point, without a recent precedent.

The trend read — three patterns worth naming
1. MoU pluralism. Bombay signed three MoUs across three sectors. Kharagpur signed three across two sectors and a domain (law). Gandhinagar signed one. Ropar signed one. Jammu signed one. Nine institutional MoUs in one week is not a normal cadence — it is the institutional posture of the year being audited on a weekly basis.
2. Money follows the second- and third-tier IITs. Every IIT-alum funding round this week named an alum from an IIT outside the top-6 (Guwahati, ISM Dhanbad, Kharagpur, Patna). This is the seven-year lag showing up — the newer IITs graduated their first proper deep-tech cohorts around 2018–2020, and those founders are now getting to Series A. The dataset needs another 24 months, but the pattern is real.
3. The cluster. Three campus deaths in four days across three IITs. Anyone framing this as a single system-wide crisis is over-reaching; anyone framing it as three unconnected incidents is under-reading. The right thing is to name the cluster, not explain it, and let the institutions do the work of asking why.

Why does the roundup not name the deceased in the three-campus-deaths section?
Because the family-grief window is under seven days old for all three cases, and because tabloid outlets have already begun to attach speculative framing (romantic-interest theories, coaching-institute blame narratives) to the deaths. The institutes and dates are on the public record. The names will be too, in time, in obituaries written by people who knew them. That is not our job this week.

No. CSAB Special Round 2026 fills vacant seats at NITs, IIITs, IIEST Shibpur, SPAs, and other Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). IIT seats closed with JoSAA Round 5. Registration opened 28 July and closes 3 August; Round 1 result is 6 August.
