IIT Madras BS degree · The data · 2026

On IIT Madras's own numbers, the BS in Data Science is worth it for the people who finish it, and most people have not finished it yet: 56,457 learners started between January 2021 and May 2025, 446 had completed the full BS by October 2025, and 47,319 of them (83%) were still studying. Of the 545 people in the "Batch 2025" cohort, 343 (63%) were working by December 2025 and 75 were doing a master's or PhD (Batch 2025 Summary). This post reads the programme's own reports, the June 2026 convocation and student accounts, and sets out who it suits and who should skip it.

For fees, eligibility and how to apply, see our companion IIT Madras BS degree guide. This post is only about value.

Is it a real IIT Madras degree?

Yes. The Electronic Systems site answers it directly: "Yes. IITM senate approves and offers the Diploma(s) and Degree(s). Degree holders become alumni of IIT Madras" (Electronic Systems home page). The Data Science academics page says the diplomas and degrees come "from IIT Madras", while the Foundation certificate comes from IIT Madras's Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (Data Science academics and fee page).

It is also plainly an online programme, and IIT Madras says so. The FAQ states: "No, there is no equivalent on-campus version. IIT Madras has carefully curated this exclusively as an online program", and that learners "will not have access to IITM campus facilities" (BS programme FAQ). Lectures are pre-recorded and assignments are online, but quizzes and end-term exams are in person at exam centres. Whether the word "online" appears on the final degree certificate is not stated anywhere we could find; the sample-certificate section of the academics page is marked "Pending for internal approval" (Data Science academics and fee page). Do not rely on anyone's claim either way until IIT Madras publishes it.

How many students actually finish?

This is the number most reviews skip. The Program Report (Sep 2025, updated 31 Oct 2025) counts every learner who started from January 2021 to May 2025. It does not follow single cohorts from start to finish, so a true "completion rate" cannot be calculated. What it does show is a long, slow funnel:

Stage (Data Science BS)LearnersSource
Applied (first applications, Jan 2021 to Sep 2025)2,00,446Program Report

Completed BSc degree (114 credits)963Program Report
Completed BS degree (142 credits)446Program Report

Two readings are both true. First, very few have reached the end: 446 BS completions against 56,457 starters. Second, few have formally quit: 83% of everyone who ever started was still listed as active. The programme allows "upto 8 years" to finish and expects about 10 hours per course per week (Data Science academics and fee page), so most learners are moving slowly, often alongside another degree or a job.

The June 2026 convocation shows the pipeline widening. IIT Madras awarded 1,460 credentials across its BS programmes: "634 BS Degree recipients, 197 BSc Degree recipients, 604 Diploma recipients and 25 Postgraduate Diploma recipients", per an institute statement reported by the Hindustan Times, 19 June 2026. That single ceremony gave out more BS degrees than the 446 counted up to October 2025.

What happens to graduates? Jobs and salaries

The best evidence is the Batch 2025 Summary. It tracks 545 people who completed the BSc or BS level during 2024, with their status as of December 2025. 435 of them were doing another degree or working alongside; 110 did this as their only degree.

Salaries of the 343 who were working: 34 under ₹5 lakh, 110 at ₹5–10 lakh, 73 at ₹10–15 lakh, 38 at ₹15–25 lakh, 25 at ₹25–50 lakh and 8 above ₹50 lakh, with 55 not disclosing (Batch 2025 Summary). The biggest single employer was IIT itself (20 people across IIT Madras, Bombay and Hyderabad), followed by TCS (8) and Deloitte (7). The report says the full list has "245 unique companies".

Read those salaries carefully. 244 of the 545 also held a B.E. or B.Tech, and many were already working professionals; the report notes elsewhere that the larger salaries are "primarily working professionals with many years of experience" (Career Choices Report (Jan 2026)). These figures describe who does this degree, not what the degree alone pays.

The placement cell numbers

The programme runs its own placement cell (IIC). Its numbers are small but current. In the September 2025 term, 62 companies advertised 257 job positions, 58 students applied and 49 got a job. Across the terms reported, IIC job salaries had a "Mean - Rs 7,50,000; Median - Rs 6,00,000; Maximum - Rs 20,00,000", and internships paid a mean of ₹22,000 a month (Career Choices Report (Jan 2026)). Far more students find work on their own: in the January 2026 term survey, 1,115 reported an internship and 379 a job that they credited to the programme (Career Choices Report (Jan 2026)).

Does it get you into a master's or GATE rank?

This is where the record is strongest. Of the Batch 2025 graduates who went on to postgraduate study, 27 went abroad (including the University of Massachusetts, Imperial College and the University of Toronto) and 48 stayed in India, 32 of them at IITs, with IIT Madras (14) and IIT Delhi (8) the most common (Batch 2025 Summary). In GATE's Data Science and AI paper, BS students took AIR 1, 7 and 10 in 2025 (Career Choices Report (April 2025)).

What does it cost compared with a campus B.Tech?

Academic fees for the full degree₹3,86,000 to ₹4,50,000 (from the Jan 2026 term)₹1,08,150 a semester × 8, plus ₹16,000 at admission: about ₹8.8 lakh

The BS costs roughly half the academic fees of a campus B.Tech and nothing for living on campus. The fee is paid course by course, so a failed course costs money again: the FAQ says a failed learner must "register for the course again at a later term along with the required fee" (BS programme FAQ). The real cost is time, at about 10 hours a week for each course you carry.

The honest downsides

  • Workload on top of another life. Learners can take up to four courses a term, and the expected effort is about 10 hours per course per week (Data Science academics and fee page; BS programme FAQ). A full load is close to a 40-hour week. Most students carry it alongside a college degree or a job.
  • Slow progress. 83% are active, yet only 706 were at the BS level in October 2025 (Program Report).
  • No campus life. No hostel, no campus access, no on-campus placement season. Student houses, the Paradox fest and in-person exams are the closest substitutes (student life page).
  • Uneven recognition. There is no published survey of how recruiters rate it. What exists is student opinion, quoted below, and it is split.

What students on Reddit say

These are individual opinions from people in or near the programme, not data.

"The course is good definitely. In terms of knowledge, sure. But the credibility in the market for it is not that high since its online at the end of the day. but people are getting placed as far as I have heard, so ig its fine." (r/IITMadras_datascience, January 2026)
"So if you are serious and can manage 1 year properly, than this course will help you a lot ! But if you are just taking it for the tag and just completing the courses alone for the sake of completeness than it won't help you ." (r/iitmadras, September 2026)
"Also no books, no notes means if you miss lectures, you are done. ... Biggest issue is every backlog is essentially a repeat of 4 months." (r/IITMadras_datascience, April 2026)
"It is worth it if you put in the effort required. If you just labour through without actually understanding any concept or cheat, then this degree is worthless." (r/developersIndia, April 2023)

Who it is good for, and who should skip it

Good fit:

  • Students in a B.Sc, B.Com, BA or lower-placement B.Tech who want rigorous maths, programming and machine learning, and an IIT Madras degree, alongside their main degree.
  • Working professionals switching into data roles, who can give 10 to 20 steady hours a week for several years.
  • Anyone aiming for GATE, an IIT M.Tech or a master's abroad, where the record of BS graduates is strongest.
  • Learners from low-income families, who get 50% to 75% fee support.

Probably skip it if:

  • You are already in a strong B.Tech in computer science and would mostly be studying the same syllabus twice. That time may be better spent on projects and internships.
  • You want campus life, a hostel and an on-campus placement season. This programme has none of these.
  • You expect the IIT name alone to get you hired. The data shows outcomes follow the work, not the tag.
  • You cannot commit for three to five years. You can exit with a diploma or BSc, but most of the published outcome data is for BSc and BS completers.

How to check this yourself: the programme publishes its Program Report, Career Choices and Batch Summary documents under "Important Docs" on study.iitm.ac.in/ds. They are updated every few months.
