Week 32 · 3 – 9 August 2026 · The IIT ledger for the week that ended today. All 23 IITs checked; 17 named with atoms; 45 cited sources; fourteen recycled stories rejected on source date before they could reach this page.
The week in one paragraph
On Saturday the Prime Minister stood at IIT Delhi and switched on Param Pragya, an AI supercomputer at the Sonipat campus, in front of three thousand graduating students. Four days earlier, food-safety inspectors from Maharashtra's FDA had walked through IIT Bombay's hostel messes and ordered two of them to stop serving. Both things are true about the same institution system in the same seven days, and reading them together is more useful than reading either alone. Around that split screen: IIT Ropar graduated 761 students and launched a drone-technology diploma, six IIT Madras professors won ₹25-lakh-a-year research grants, IIT Guwahati built a water-poison detector for ₹3,500, and IIT Hyderabad opened what it says is India's first industry–academia nuclear programme. Meanwhile the summer internship season opened on four campuses at once, and the students living through it were blunt about how it went.
Deep dive — Param Pragya, and what IIT Delhi actually announced
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed IIT Delhi's 57th convocation on Saturday 8 August and inaugurated Param Pragya, an AI-based high-performance supercomputing and project cluster facility. The PIB release describes it as "marking a significant step towards strengthening advanced research infrastructure in the country." One detail worth getting right: the machine sits at IIT Delhi's Sonipat campus, not Hauz Khas — the institute's own pre-event release is explicit about it.
The convocation itself conferred degrees on more than 3,000 students, including 587 PhD scholars. Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi — who took additional charge of the ministry in late July, after Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation on 25 July, a fact we cover in a separate July piece and mention here only as background — used his first institutional address to say India's education ecosystem had become "learner-centric, research-driven, and future-ready."

Why this matters. The number to watch in that table is not the supercomputer — it is the international intake going from 43 to 62. IIT Delhi has spent two years trying to convert reputation into inbound foreign enrolment, and a 44% jump off a small base is the first real evidence it is working. Param Pragya is the visible artefact; the intake figure is the strategy. Also note what a national compute facility at Sonipat implies: IIT Delhi is treating its second campus as research infrastructure rather than an overflow site, which is the difference between a satellite and a second front door.
One caution for readers who saw the convocation trending. On r/IITDelhi the night before, the dominant campus thread was about the security cordon, not the machine — "A lot of rifles, baricading and checking in the campus. Seeing for the first time" (22 upvotes). Convocations with a sitting PM are a logistics event before they are an academic one.
IIT Bombay's split screen — a world championship and a shut mess in the same week
TL;DR: Maharashtra's FDA halted two hostel messes over missing licences. Three days earlier the campus won a double at Formula Student Portugal.
Between 4 and 6 August, Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration ran an inspection drive across Mumbai and reached IIT Bombay's Powai campus. Two hostel messes were ordered to stop operating. Per PTI via ThePrint, the FDA "observed that the operators of these food centres didn't possess necessary permissions and registrations. Accordingly, they were directed to halt operations." A third caterer, Annapurna Catering Services — which runs the messes for three other hostels — held a valid state licence but was issued an Improvement Notice for regulation deficiencies, per the Free Press Journal and Business Today. We are deliberately not printing hostel numbers: the wire copy and FPJ disagree on which two were shut, and being wrong about a specific hostel is worse than being vague. No illness or injury was reported — this is a licensing and hygiene action, not a casualty story.
What makes it land differently is that students had been saying it first. On 7 August, a post titled "was h17 always this bad?" drew 42 upvotes and 32 comments on r/iitbombay: "the lift near hall manager's office has been out of service for a week and no action was taken… the food is unhygienic, with dead bugs being found everyday. there are rats running around in the mess and the kitchen. the washroom flushes don't work." The most-upvoted sentiment in the replies was not a request for a maintenance ticket. It was that the escalation ladder is exhausted: "at this point i feel like the only way to improve our situation is to defame IIT Bombay nationally so the authorities are forced to save their asses" (15 upvotes).
Three days before the inspectors arrived, the same campus was winning. IIT Bombay Racing took first overall in the Electric Vehicle category at Formula Student Portugal 2026, and IIT Bombay Racing Driverless won the Driverless Cup — becoming "the first Indian Formula Student team to participate in the Driverless Formula Student category at an international competition." First in Engineering Design, first in Efficiency, second in Endurance.
Why this matters. A campus can build a world-beating autonomous race car and fail to license its kitchen. Those are not contradictory — they are what happens when student-led excellence is funded and celebrated while facilities management is neither. The FDA action is useful precisely because it converts a Reddit complaint into a regulatory record. Internship season opened — and the students counting the offers were not impressed
TL;DR: Day 1 and Day 2 of summer internship recruiting ran 6–7 August. Quant and finance showed up. Core and software largely did not.
This is the week the 2027 summer internship season opened across several campuses, and the most reliable early read came from students compiling their own spreadsheets. At IIT Kharagpur, a thread titled "Intern stats day1 and 2" hit 101 upvotes and 47 comments, with a running tally of 408 offers across the first two days — immediately followed by commenters auditing the sheet for double-counted recruiters. Treat 408 as a student count, not a CDC figure; no institute has published official numbers.
At IIT Bombay the tone was worse. Asked whether it was better than last year, the top reply was "Nope whole lot worse." A longer breakdown: "mostly quant and finance companies came till now… They did not hire in elec (only 1 or 2 i know). Software me very less like 4 5 companies came and core wale depression me". At IIT Delhi, a 20-upvote post titled "No intern till now" asked whether to leave engineering for the government sector entirely — "my cg is very low and don't have skills to compensate for this either" — and a reply put a number on the frustration: "companies coming now are paying just 50,000. Offcampus intern pay much better then this." Another, at 7 upvotes: "8 and circuital and oa acche jane ke baad bhi intern nhi lgi" — an 8-CGPA circuital student clearing online assessments and still going unplaced.
Why this matters. Internship Day 1 is the leading indicator for the December placement season, and the composition signal is louder than the count. A Day 1 dominated by quant and finance with thin core and software participation is what a cautious hiring year looks like six months early. If you are tracking this, the number to watch is not the total — it is the software-and-core share, and this week it was low across three separate campuses reporting independently.
IIT Ropar graduated 761 and added a drone-technology diploma
TL;DR: The week's cleanest good-news story from a second-gen IIT.
IIT Ropar held its 15th convocation on Thursday 6 August, conferring degrees on 761 students: "377 Bachelor of Technology (BTech), 177 Master of Technology (MTech), 65 Master of Science (MSc), one Bachelor of Science (BSc), one diploma and 140 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) scholars," per Careers360. Alongside it the institute announced a redesigned undergraduate curriculum, an interdisciplinary integrated dual-degree programme, and "a one-year postgraduate diploma in UAV operations and drone technology in partnership with Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University."
Chief guest Satyanarayan Nuwal gave the line worth keeping: "Your background does not decide your ceiling. Your persistence does."
Why this matters. A drone-operations diploma run jointly with an aviation university is a vocational credential inside an IIT — unusual, and a sign that the newer IITs are willing to build for a job market rather than for a rankings table. Watch whether the older IITs copy it.
Six IIT Madras professors won ₹25 lakh a year for five years
TL;DR: Six ANRF J.C. Bose Grants to one institute in one announcement.
The institute announced on 7 August that six faculty had been offered the Anusandhan National Research Foundation J.C. Bose Grant, which "provides ₹25 lakh annually for five years to support frontier research." The six: Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan (Mechanical), Prof. Thalappil Pradeep (Chemistry), Prof. Deepa Venkitesh (Electrical), Prof. Jitendra S. Sangwai (Chemical), Prof. Ramakrishnan Swaminathan (Applied Mechanics and Biomedical), and Prof. Sundargopal Ghosh (Chemistry). Careers360 corroborated the same day.
Separately, the IIT Madras Global Research Foundation signed an MoU with Indonesia's Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology on 7 August, aimed at deep-tech commercialisation and the India–Indonesia partnership.
Why this matters. Six senior grants at ₹1.25 crore each over five years is ₹7.5 crore of guaranteed research funding landing in one institute. Grant concentration like this is how research gravity compounds — the money attracts the PhD students who attract the next round.
IIT Guwahati built a water-poison detector for ₹3,500
TL;DR: Detects arsenic, lead, chromium, fluoride and E. coli. Two rupees a sample.
Announced 6 August: "In lab tests, the developed device has accurately detected arsenic, lead, iron, chromium, fluoride, and Escherichia coli bacteria in water samples… The E-Eye device has been developed at a cost of approximately Rs. 3,500, with a per-sample testing cost of around Rs. 2." Built by Prof. Tapas K. Mandal and Prof. Harshal B. Nemade with research scholars, published in the IEEE Sensors Journal, with co-authors at KIIT Bhubaneswar and RKM Residential College Kolkata.
Why this matters. Arsenic contamination in groundwater across the Brahmaputra and Ganga basins is a public-health problem measured in millions of people, and the binding constraint has always been the cost of testing at village scale, not the science. A ₹3,500 device at ₹2 a sample is the correct order of magnitude for district-level deployment. The open question is manufacturing and who pays — a lab prototype at this price is a beginning, not a rollout.
IIT Hyderabad opened a nuclear technology programme
TL;DR: Three-month residential course, first batch started 3 August, built with industry.
IIT Hyderabad and Crimson Energy Experts launched ANUGYAN, a Nuclear Technology Orientation Programme the institute describes as India's first industry–academia programme in the field. Per Careers360, "the programme was initiated at the IIT Hyderabad in the presence of industry and academia seniors on August 3, 2026," and the institute confirmed it on its own news feed. The curriculum covers reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, radiation shielding, small modular reactors, AERB compliance and simulator training. R. D. Mane (Retd.), President-Nuclear Division at CEEPL: "Nuclear technology execution demands strict compliance, quality assurance and specialized engineering design."
Why this matters. India is targeting 100 GWe of nuclear capacity by 2047, against roughly 8.8 GWe today. That is a workforce problem long before it is a reactor problem, and nobody has been training for it at scale. A three-month residential orientation is small, but it is the first visible attempt to build the pipeline rather than assume it.
IIT (BHU) Varanasi signed two MoUs in as many days
TL;DR: The Indian Navy on Monday, the Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday.
On 3 August, IIT (BHU) signed an agreement with the Indian Navy at naval headquarters in New Delhi. Per Careers360, it was signed "by B Sivakumar, Vice Admiral, AVSM, VSM, COM, Indian Navy, and Rajesh Kumar, dean (research and development), IIT (BHU), Varanasi," covering indigenous capability for "future maritime security challenges." A day later the institute signed with Madhya Pradesh's Department of Higher Education at Bhopal on research, innovation and skill development under NEP 2020.
Elsewhere on the MoU ledger: AIIMS Bathinda and IIT Indore signed on 5 August for affordable medical technology, pairing Dr. Ratan Gupta's clinical side with Prof. Suhas Joshi's engineering one.
IIT Patna's UG median jumped 38%
TL;DR: 687+ offers, median up from ₹13 lakh to ₹18 lakh. Current-cycle data.
Reported 6 August: "The class of 2026 received more than 687 job offers from multinational companies, startups and public-sector undertakings," with "the median annual package for undergraduate students increasing by nearly 38 per cent, from Rs 13 lakh to Rs 18 lakh" and the average rising 17% to ₹23.17 lakh, per HRKatha, citing Times of India.
And from late last week, just outside this window but worth carrying: IIT Bhubaneswar crossed 500 placements for 2025-26 on 1 August, with a UG median of ₹15.3 lakh and PG median of ₹11.2 lakh.
Why this matters. Both institutes published medians. Almost nobody does. The entire IIT placement discourse runs on highest-package headlines that describe one student, and a median is the only number that describes the batch — which is why we built the mid-season report card around the same distinction. ₹18 lakh at Patna and ₹15.3 lakh at Bhubaneswar are the honest shape of a 2025-26 IIT outcome outside the top six.
Careers Watch — the hiring signal, and who is actually recruiting
Two IIT-linked funding rounds cleared verification this week, both hardware-adjacent deeptech, neither SaaS:

Solinas is the one to read closely. Co-led by Mela Ventures and Hero Enterprise Family Office, it builds robots for underground water and sanitation infrastructure — its HomoSEP unit targets manual scavenging directly — and is deployed across 30+ cities in 15 states plus Dubai Municipality. An IIT Madras incubatee raising a Series A1 on sewer robotics is a more interesting datapoint about where Indian deeptech capital is going than any AI round this week.

Hiring-signal read. Put the last two rows next to each other. IIT Delhi is paying up to ₹2.5 lakh a month for a contract head of design and manufacturing. IIT Hyderabad is paying ₹18,000 a month for a project assistant who needs a first-class BTech in mechanical, aerospace or automotive engineering. That is a 14× spread inside the same institute system in the same week, and it is the actual reason the research-staff pipeline leaks: a first-class engineering graduate can earn more than ₹18,000 almost anywhere. The placement headlines and the research-staff pay bands describe two different economies.
Policy and admissions — what changes next
GATE 2027 registration opens Friday 14 August. IIT Madras is the organising institute; the official portal lists regular registration closing 21 September and extended late-fee registration closing 30 September, with exams on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 and results on 19 March. A DigiLocker account is mandatory for Indian nationals. The headline change — a new Robotics and Automation paper, plus revised XE, XH and XL sectional codes — we covered when the brochure dropped in late July. The portal notes dates are liable to change.
CSAB Special Round-II result is due 12 August. Round-I allotment came on 6 August; physical reporting runs 13–18 August. One thing to be clear about: CSAB does not allocate IIT seats. It fills vacancies at NITs, IIITs, IIEST Shibpur, SPAs and other GFTIs. IIT seats closed with JoSAA Round 5 in July. Schedule per the official brochure via FreeJobAlert.
NEET-UG may go the JEE route. The Centre told the Supreme Court in an affidavit this week that it is weighing "whether NEET-UG should continue as a single-stage examination or adopt a two-stage format similar to JEE Main and JEE Advanced," with the final roadmap resting on the High-Powered Task Force chaired by Nandan Nilekani, as reported on 6 August. - IIT Bhilai: Quiet week — checked press page, events calendar and regional press. In-window activity is recruitment: a Project Associate-I under a DST National Quantum Mission project (applications to 12 August) and a role on the Dantewada District Development Design project.
- IIT Dharwad: Closed its 2026 orientation programme for new UG and PG students on 1 August; PhD physical registration ran 31 July – 3 August. JoSAA/CSAB/DASA reporting is 13–19 August.
- IIT Jammu: Quiet week — checked institute site and regional press. The CSIR-IIIM tripartite MoU that ranks for "IIT Jammu August" is from 2025.
- IIT Palakkad: The strongest week of the six. Prof. Jagadeesh Bayry, head of Biological Sciences and Engineering, was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Biological Sciences on 3 August. Team Mitra ran an expressive-therapy workshop, "Movere: Beyond Words", on 4 August.
- IIT Goa: Quiet week — the 7th convocation and the state's 4.65 lakh sq m Farmagudi land handover both landed 20 July, before this window.
- IIT Tirupati: Quiet week. BTech, MTech and MSc classes began 3 August — the latest campus reporting date among the IITs — and an ISRO-project JRF post closed 5 August.
The trend read — three patterns worth naming
1. The showcase and the plumbing are drifting apart. This week produced a national AI supercomputer, six crore-scale research grants, a world Formula Student title, and a device that finds arsenic for two rupees. It also produced two unlicensed hostel kitchens, a lift out of service for a week, and students who believe public embarrassment is a faster route to repair than the complaint system. Both columns are real. The institutions that close the gap will be the ones that treat facilities as infrastructure rather than overhead.
2. Medians are finally being published. IIT Patna and IIT Bhubaneswar both disclosed median packages within nine days of each other. After a decade of highest-package theatre, two mid-tier IITs voluntarily publishing the number that actually describes a batch is a small institutional shift — and the right one to reward with attention.
3. Internship Day 1 is flashing amber. Three campuses, independently, reported the same composition: quant and finance present, core and software thin. The December placement season is six months out. If the pattern holds through Day 5 and Day 10, the 2026-27 cycle will look different from the one everyone is still quoting numbers from.
